butment

1) A short form of ‘abutment’.

First noted in the contract of 1485-6 for Lady’s Bridge in Sheffield: 1485-6 with sure butments at eyther ende. The word was not in common use but in 1741 it occurred again in accounts for Pateley Bridge, in the rare compound land-butment.
