Bow Bridge

1) Common Yorkshire place-name.

On record from the fourteenth century at least. The earliest certain example is le Bowebrig in Brantingham in 1370, although Smith suggested that Bewebrug in Steeton probably had the same meaning. The name occurs several times in all three Ridings and the inference is that it was once a generic term, comparable with Stock Bridge.
