Toppitt

1) A minor place-name, could mean either 'top pit' or 'the orepit' in local pronunciation.

This minor place-name occurs several times in south Yorkshire, and Smith lists examples in Denby and Hoyland: there was also an enclosure named Toppit in Mirfield, on a sales plan of 1829. These are usually explained as ‘top pit’ but ‘the orepit’ would have a pronunciation in dialect that could offer an alternative explanation.
