1) Originally, it is said, this was the metallic tag on the end of a lace which made it easier to thread through an eyelet.

Later the tag became a decorative item and the word had this meaning in most of the examples noted. In 1486, Thomas Pereson of Beverley inherited a typpet of blak velvet with sylver aglettes : in 1544 the wife of Arthur Thompson of Wakefield was left a ribbon with towe siluer aglettes .
