borrow

1) A word noted in mining records. According to west Yorkshire correspondents to the EDD this was to withdraw the timber supports of the roof when all the coal had been won.

In 1693, in Farnley, 3d was paid for 20 punshons borrowing . In 1759, in Tong, 5s was paid for wood borrowing. It is not always possible to decide between ‘barrow’ and ‘borrow’ when reading these accounts, but ‘borrow’ seems possible in those entries that have to do with pit-props.
