bushman

1) Christopher Tayler of Hull was described as busshman when he died in 1588 (YRS22/123).

The word appears to be peculiar to Hull and its origin can be found in a rental of the town’s lands: 1465 The busdyke of every busman for occupacon of itt, iiis iiijd. The editor Rosemary Horrox explained that the Busdyke connected Hull’s fresh water supply to the town ditch and that the ‘busmen’ carried the water into the town.
