byrs

1) A word for 'bristle'.

As a word for ‘bristle’ this is on record from the Old English period but its use in Scotland dominates the entries in the OED. It may though explain the name given to a faggot-maker employed by Bolton Priory: 1298-9 Nicholao Dyerhs et Byrs ijs viijd

1304-5 Byrs fagatori iiijs vjd.
