durn

1) A wooden gate-post.

This is the OED’s preferred spelling for the item discussed under ‘dearn, dern’, a word in widespread use from the fourteenth century which is said to mean ‘a door-post made of solid wood

the framework of a doorway’. In Yorkshire, the examples have a regional spelling and the meaning is more usually 'wooden gate-post'.
