field house

1) This was the usual word in the past for the field barns that are now characteristic of the Dales landscape, especially in Swaledale and Wensleydale.

A Wensleydale survey contains numerous references to the term and the following entry is typical: 1613 James Peerson holdeth one parcell of meadow ground with a field house upon the same. A search for stolen lead ore in 1692 took mineworkers to another suspicious Field house belonging to John Alcock where they found some Elbolton oar.
