1) Gimp was originally silk, worsted, or cotton twist with a cord or wire running through it (OED).

1690 Laid downe for gimpe laise at Skipton. However, it came to refer less specifically to a kind of trimming, sometimes decorated with beads or spangles, so five dozen of gimp buttons which were listed in a Knaresborough inventory in 1696 were possibly ornamental features.
