The OED says ‘a man or body of men in charge of animals grazing’ but in one of the two examples quoted there the reference clearly had to do with soldiers, as does the only Yorkshire reference noted: 1734 returning from the grass guard to quarters in Wakefield. The exact meaning here is uncertain.
