kette

1) A word which occurred in the records of Esholt ironworks.

1567-8 For iren stone ... for everye lode Wyche ys 6 kettes ... and a lode and a halffe wyche ys 9 kettes wyll be a blome . It was evidently a measure, perhaps the container in which the ironstone was transported. I find no reference to the word in dictionaries so perhaps it was a form of ‘kit’ although that does not seem likely.
