The word ‘lintie’ was once commonly used in the northern counties for the linnet, a bird that ate the seeds of ‘lin’ or flax: ‘lintycock’ is not recorded independently but it may probably the male linnet and the source of the place-name Lintycock Stones in north Yorkshire.
