packman

1) A man who makes a living by selling goods from a pack which he carries from place to place, a pedlar.

I have found no evamples of the word in Yorkshire sources but the by-name is on record from c.1160 and minor place-names are also evidence of its use: 1625 Buried ... a poore traveller dying at Brampton hige [high?] packman gate 29 Sept, Wath upon Dearne.
