1) A kind of coarse cloth which presumably took its name from the town of Penistone in south Yorkshire.

It is referred to in an Act of Parliament: 1552 clothes commonlye called Pennystones and at intervals thereafter: 1617 a greene penny stone cover, Ripley

1653 Item paid for a yard of pennisston & halfe a yard of fustion 2s 8d, Stockeld

1693 In the shop ... 3yds penneston, 3s 9d, Selby.
