ripper

1) A spelling of ‘rippier’, that is one who carries fish inland to sell.

1623 Marmaduke Potter of York ripper Recognizance Ł20, Scarborough. This man was elsewhere described as a pannierman, the usual word locally for such a trader. As ‘rippier’ was more usual in Sussex it is possible that the word had been brought into east Yorkshire by fishermen from the south.
