1) A sluice, a word of Dutch origin, evidently introduced in the seventeenth century during the drainage schemes carried out by Vermuyden and others.

Stovin’s manuscript contains information about the damage done to the Sasse at Turn Brigg in 1645 and the decree made at Thorne the following year for reedifieing the Sluces and sasses pulled up by malicious People.
