1) The scantling was a carpenter’s or builder’s measuring rod, but used in the plural the word meant ‘dimensions’.

1682 the timber … to be of such scantlings or dimencions as may be strong and substantiall for such a roofe, Scriven. It seems occasionally to have referred to the timber itself: 1793 32ft of scantling for a shoring, Thurstonland.
