1) Impurities which resulted from the preparation of alum.

In 1651, several North Riding men were presented for throwing the slam of allome into the water-course at Slape-wath. The processes which created the refuse are commented on in a foot-note by Canon Atkinson who mentioned also that a drain at Saltburn was called a ‘slam-hole’.
