1) The earliest use of this word for a ventilation duct is recorded in Westmorland.

1709 If the miners should not open their Air-Pits and keep their Thurling-Ways clear. In Yorkshire, in 1754, miners in Beeston were paid for sinking an air pit and fixing in the air pipes. The fact that these were nailed together suggests that they may have resembled the air-boxes employed in the north-east.
