1707 a new bancke shoule 1s 8d, Farnley. On the other hand, in 1713, two bank shovels in Shibden were for the working, which may imply that they were short-handled shovels for use at the bank or coal-face. The Two top shovels listed in a Tong colliery in 1840 were probably for work above ground.
