1) Possibly an earlier form of ‘throw down’.

In W.B. Trigg’s history of the Halifax coalfield he wrote that in 1660 ‘the workmen … working with a mare in the coal mine, the mine was cast down two yards and they gave up getting the coal’. The problem with this example is that the author was paraphrasing the document he had seen, not quoting directly from it.
