1) A tool or implement used in smithies or at grinding wheels, although the word is rare and its exact use is uncertain.

1543 Item iij paire of pynsowrs, vjd. Item vj bowters vjd. Item ij cawkers, ijd, Ripley. In 1739, a scissorsmith called George Greaves had 4 grinding stones, 4 caulks, valued at 15s, Sheffield and in 1755, Joseph Swallow of Stannington had 8 New Stones and 8 Colkes at his grinding wheel. 'Caulkers' are said to be iron rims in Cumbria.
