The occupational by-name is on record in East Anglia from 1207 but Yorkshire references are scarce: c.1570 he dyd pargett and whyte the topps of the chambers, Woodsome. The alternative spelling ‘pargen’ has been noted in co. Durham from 1449-50 and later in York: 1541-2 settyng up off wallys and pargenyng xvs xd, York.
