1) Apparently a diminutive of ‘sop’, a small piece of bread, often toasted or fried, used to garnish or accompany soups and stews.

In a recipe of 1683, entitled To stew Pigeons is the following item: so thicken the liquour then putt in the herbes again and serve them upp in sippetts of bread .
