1309 ‘every house in ... Barkisland and Stainland whence smoke issues shall give by custom for one day’s harvesting 1d’. It occurs in land deeds for Lealholm in North Yorkshire from 1686, where green pennyes and smoake pennyes were paid to the landlord. A Wolds parish terrier has: 1764 Id for every house called smoke Penny, Kirby Underdale.
