1) This was a stand for an anvil, and originally it will have been a solid block of wood, a section of a large tree.

Such a block was noted for a stythistok at Scarborough in 1284. Later, some ‘stocks’ were of metal. In 1689, Francis Brownell’s possessions included a Stithie and Stock and in 1734 John Fearnally had a Stiddy Stock, Sheffield.
