The OED has examples from 1464 but it is on record in Yorkshire from the thirteenth century: 1297 de Roberto Feriman, Yedingham

1379 Johannes atte Water, feriman, Ferry Fryston. Reaney has an example of the by-name in Berkshire in the late twelfth century.
