rollers

1) Used to form metal into bars or sheets.

The cutlers had rollers in their smithies long before there were rolling mills, although it is not clear how they were powered. In 1692, for example, Robert Nicholls had possessions which included three ‘engines’ with a total value of Ł4 10s 0d and a pair of rollers worth Ł1 2s 6d. The inference is that the rollers and one or other of the contrivances described as ‘engines’ were used to form metal into bars or sheets.
